Atif Tauqeer's view on journalism

Updated: May 1, 2021

The lecture started with a brief introduction of Atif Tauqeer, his education, work history and a little about where he is currently working and how he is writing his own book now. He went on to telling us about the structure which is followed in digital writing as well as news writing. Explaining how the writing should be clear, concise and should go from a main transitional headline to major details to minor details. It should include the 5Ws; who, what, when, where, and why. The writing style and language should be basic and easy to understand. Moving on, he mentioned how publishing news was a big task before the advent of digital media. A whole team of journalists and editors would work together to provide people the absolute truth, to share credible pieces of news to the world. But in these times, anyone can share or publish anything on the social media and half the news on the internet are mere rumors or fake news. Looking at the statistics, fake news spreads faster than credible news pieces as they are sensationalizing. They have the power to attract people. It has brought the media hubs to the point where even the leading media hubs share irrelevant news just to get some hits. He then talked about the relationship between the sender and the receiver and how they are both interlinked with each other. The sender sends what the receiver wants and the receiver receives what the sender sends. He shared some tips about how a blog or a vlog attracts more audience if it’s not that lengthy and easy for everyone to connect to. Another main aspect of grabbing attention from the audience is crispy writing which basically means creating unique and powerful content. The writer should has a grasp at wordplay and must include a visual for the viewers, a picture or a video but something different. You must have a community of people who can help you in sharing your content. The lecture then moved towards discussing freedom of expression and how it took the western world a long fight to get to the point of freedom they are at and how our country still hasn’t been throw the entire process and will take a few decades to reach that point. As our culture in full of contradictions. You are stopped from thinking and stopped from asking questions. People are forced to keep their opinions to themselves and are threatened to stay silent about certain aspects.
